Conservative Vein Treatment

Conservative vein therapy, like the use of compression stockings, refers to a non-invasive, non-procedural approach to ameliorate or reduce the signs and symptoms associated with an underlying vein condition. The vein therapy approach developed and implemented by our team is conservative in nature in that it involves lifestyle modifications as well as the use of medical grade compression stockings to be worn on the legs. Usually the compression stockings need only be worn while showering, or when sitting or in an upright position. In general, compression stockings do not need to be worn when lying down or while in bed resting or sleeping.

While no substitute for vein treatments like sclerotherapy or EVLA, there are some changes you can make, along side your vein doctor’s directions, that will help manage your condition. With this conservative therapy approach, patients with symptomatic varicose veins may perform the following self-directed therapies in an attempt to stabilize, control, and reduce their leg vein symptoms.

Self-Directed Therapies

  • Wear medical grade compression stockings on a daily basis
  • Avoidance of high heels
  • Avoidance of crossing the legs
  • Avoidance of hot baths or hot tubs
  • Daily walking and exercising
  • Elevation of their legs if swollen or edematous

Historically, both vein specialists and insurance companies have recommended a trial period of about 3 to 6 months of conservative vein therapy before proceeding with or approving procedure-based therapeutic vein treatments. While conservative vein therapy is beneficial in reducing the symptoms and slowing the progression of a chronic vein condition, it will neither prevent nor eliminate the underlying condition. Since insurers do not provide coverage for an asymptomatic vein condition, the benefit of conservative vein therapy may be the discovery or renewed awareness of symptoms attributable to their underlying vein condition that improve, but do not completely go away following the trial period.
